STORE BOUGHT FOOD
PROCESSED FOOD
The Illustration above is not exaggerated.
When you buy food from a store, a fast food joint or food that is processed, The food chain and movement of the food is huge and complicated. This complication leads to higher prices, excess fuel consumption and food safety risks.
As much as you would like to believe that all food comes from family farms, It is just not the case today. The large "Factory Farm" is replacing local small Family farms at alarming rates. The factory farms utilize practices that are not in the best interest of the consumer, but are in the companies interest in the form of profit. To assure profits the factory farm uses excessive amounts of pesticides, genetically modified seeds, or antibiotics and growth hormones.
Large centralized Factory Farms must ship product to a processing and packaging plant then to a distribution point then to the retail site. We wont even mention out of season foods that are shipped from other countries. All of this transportation not only costs money, but it damages the environment.

Factory Farming creates unnecessary pollution, unnecessary oil demands resulting in environmental destruction. We have seen what our demands for oil have done in the recent past to the environment, The more we demand the more damage we can expect.
The hidden costs of all this transportation and destruction have been explained in a fun but very real way in a video called "The True Cost of Food" In the video the "REAL" cost of a pound of meat is $815.00 per pound and $374.00 for a tomato! I know you are probably saying "How can that be?"
This is a must see video to help understand the impact of our food choices and the true cost of food.
The video can be viewed in the Education Center
along with many other informative videos, or you can view it here.
